The idea of organizing this club originated with long time member, Ed Menkes, who unfortunately passed away very early in the development of the group. A few members carried on with Ed’s idea and have created a vibrant community for learning and connecting. The group currently has a membership of close to one hundred individuals.
Meetings take place at 10:30 am on the third Wednesday of the month and begin with a short business agenda followed by yoga and lunch. Each gathering features a “program of the day” which may include relevant speakers, visits to local events and venues, musicial programs, and other activities. The annual trip to the Cloverdale Race Track is a programming highlight.
Members of the club also visit shut-ins, bringing a portable tea party and friendly conversation to 60 plus members who are unable to attend events. In addition, a monthly visit is made to Temple members who reside at the Louis Brier Home for the Aged.
The 60 Plus group provides a vibrant, engaging and supportive environment for our Temple elders who contribute so much to synagogue life.

In the 5th year of meeting on the third Wednesday of every month, we are growing in numbers – from gatherings of 11 to 40 seniors. 60+ Group attempts to cover many needs and desires of this portion of Temple Sholom’s members. During this last year we enjoyed:
- River cruises on the Fraser River
- Harness races in Cloverdale
- Senior educational programs developed by Simon Fraser University
- Highly acclaimed speakers covering many subjects: current events, Israel, matters of our health and welfare and many more.
- Most important – watching this group come together and enjoying each others companionship, which sometimes develops into new friendships at a time in our lives when that friendship can become a wonderful part of our future.
Our meetings start at 10:00 a.m. with chair yoga (it’s wonderful to watch 25-30 seniors doing this at a time), a short business meeting, a great lunch ($10.00 or bring our own), followed by our program.
We charge no dues and any expenses incurred are paid as we go.
This group put on two bingos with all proceeds donated to Temple Sholom.
We have a committee who puts on a tea at the Louis Briar for all members of Temple who reside there.
We know there are many members of Temple who would fit into this group and are certainly welcome to join us. Just look at the happy faces coming off a river cruise, phone Temple and tell them you would like to be one of those smiling faces.
