Topic: China and the Jews
The first wave of Ashkenazi Jewish migration to Shanghai began in the 1880s, primarily as a result of anti-Jewish pogroms in the Russian Empire. Most came via Siberia or Manchuria, and although the numbers were relatively small at first, this migration laid the groundwork for later, larger arrivals—especially during the 1930s and 1940s.

Sephardi Jews (primarily Baghdadi Jews, such as the Sassoon and Kadoorie families) began arriving in Shanghai in the mid-19th century, after the First Opium War (1839–1842), when the city opened to foreign trade. They were drawn by the city's strategic geographical location. Shanghai was originally a small fishing village before its rapid growth into a major international port city.

Are you interested in chanting Torah or Haftarah, but never learned how? Did you chant Torah at your B’nei Mitzvah, but haven’t done it since? Are you curious about the system of cantillation that has been part of Jewish tradition for centuries?

Join Cantor Cohen this summer for a three-part course in cantillation.

We will cover why we chant, the origins of cantillation (the system of chanting our sacred texts), and work on practical Torah and Haftarah chanting skills so that you can feel confident chanting Torah or Haftarah at services! Even if you have chanted Torah before but want to brush up on your skills, please join us for this free series. Open to all musical levels.

Prerequisite: You must be able to read Hebrew.

We will be making a vegetarian soup which will be frozen in containers at Temple and be available for delivery to those congregants who need some tender loving care.

Come and help chop, cook and stir the ingredients as well as package and store in freezer! You can expect to be there for up to three hours.


Please RSVP to Donna Ornstein at dornstein@telus.net Bring your own apron, cutting or chopping knife and a vegetable peeler. Also bring your lunch if you wish.

We are also looking for volunteers to be available to deliver the soup as needed.

Dan Levitt, British Columbia Seniors Advocate, will be speaking about current issues for B.C. seniors, the Office of the Seniors Advocate (OSA), and its recent reports.
The OSA monitors and analyzes seniors services and issues in B.C., and makes recommendations to government and service providers to address systemic issues.
The services which the Office monitors are in five key areas: health care, housing, income supports, community supports and transportation. The OSA collaborates with service providers, government and health authorities to improve effectiveness, efficiency and outcomes.
Lunch provided by Nava Creative Kosher Cuisine:

OPTION 1: Susy’s Cheese Blintzes with Homemade Strawberry-Rhubarb Sauce and Sour Cream
OPTION 2: Vegan Buddha Bowl: Crispy tofu, Rice noodle, pickled carrot, radish and cucumber

Served with Roasted Garlic Hummus, Israeli Salad and Pita
Assorted pastries for dessert.

COST: $18 Temple Sholom member, $28 Non-member
Bio: Dan Levitt has tirelessly championed the rights of seniors for 30 years at the provincial, national and international levels.
Prior to his appointment as B.C.’s Seniors Advocate, Dan held leadership positions in senior-living and long-term care homes in the Lower Mainland for more than ten years where he helped shape a dementia-friendly future for seniors and their loved ones.
He was an adjunct professor of gerontology at both Simon Fraser University and a former sessional instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He has also been a surveyor with Accreditation Canada, reviewing quality improvement and person-centred care at long-term care homes and community-based service providers across the country.
He is a certified health executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and achieved Fellowship status in the college in July 2024. He also received the Young Executive Award presented by the BC Lower Mainland Chapter Executive of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. On the global stage, Levitt recently served as a member of the board of directors of the Global Ageing Network and the International Federation on Ageing.
Dan earned an undergraduate degree from the UBC and masters degree from the University of North Texas, Center for Studies in Aging. He has served on the board of directors for the Denominational Health Association and the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia. He is inspired by the aging journeys of his grandparents and great-grandparents, and is now supporting his parents, who are living life to the fullest in their mid-80s.

A conversation with Jacqui & Yaron Vital, the parents of Adi Vital-Kaploun.
Cousin of Temple Sholom member Jason Rivers.

In the early morning hours of October 7th, Hamas stormed Kibbutz Holit, a small kibbutz in southern Israel. As the terrorists went house to house, Adi hid with her two small children while her father hid two houses away. Adi's actions on that fateful morning saved the lives of her father and her children, Sadly, Adi was murdered by Hamas in her shelter. In the aftermath, Jacqui and Yaron are on a mission to tell their daughter's story and raise awareness to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.
