Sisterhood Shabbaton 2026
Friday, February 20 and Saturday, February 21 at Temple Sholom
Every year we set aside one special weekend to elevate and celebrate the role of Sisterhood at Temple Sholom. We'll sing along with the beloved Sisterhood Choir, take part in both Shabbat services, and hear fascinating stories from a diverse and dynamic panel of Jewish women with roots around the world during our "Tapestries of Traditions" Lunch & Learn panel. On Friday we'll proudly honour this year's Jan Pollack Volunteer Recognition Award winner, Jenny Glickman-Rynd, with a special Oneg Shabbat. Don't miss out – sign up today, we look forward to welcoming all of you!

Oneg Shabbat Honouring Jenny Glickman-Rynd
Friday, February 20, 2026 (following the 8:00 pm service)

The Jan Pollack Volunteer Recognition Award annually honours a longterm volunteer who has gone above and beyond in service to Sisterhood and the Temple Sholom community. The award is a living tribute to Jan Pollack (z'l), who founded our Sisterhood and served as the first woman president of any congregation in Vancouver.
About this year's Jan Pollack Winner, Jenny Glickman-Rynd:
Jenny has been a guiding light in Sisterhood for more than 10 years, serving as a Board member, a tireless volunteer, and the creative mastermind behind our much loved annual Women’s Seder, which she launched in 2015 during her first year in Sisterhood. As Board President and Co-President for three years, Jenny helped expand and strengthen Sisterhood, and led us in successfully hosting a highly impactful WRJ Pacific District Area Day.
Jenny brings to Sisterhood a unique mix of leadership skills, organizational prowess, and passions for reading, learning, and cooking. After stepping down from the Board last year, she remains an active member of Sisterhood’s book clubs and Rosh Chodesh Women’s Torah Study, and loves cooking for Sisterhood gatherings. Jenny mentors newer Sisterhood Board members and serves on committees for Women of Reform Judaism. She is also a Temple Sholom gabbai and served as interim principal of the Hebrew School.
A retired ESL teacher, Jenny has lived all over the world and loves spending time with her husband Aaron, her three children, and seven grandchildren in Vancouver, Calgary, and New York. Jenny's message to women new to Sisterhood: “If you don’t find what you’re looking for right away, don’t worry – you’ll find like-minded women to help you create it!”

Tapestries of Traditions:
Stories from Jewish Women with Roots Around the World
Saturday, February 21 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel
Please join us for a fascinating panel discussion featuring four Jewish women whose stories reflect the richness and diversity of Jewish life around the world. Panelists Esther Moses-Wood, Tami Gabay, Bella Sherman, and Ronit Rada will share personal experiences shaped by ancient Jewish communities in India, Iran, Morocco, and Ethiopia. Through food, family, ritual, and memory, our panelists will explore how tradition is preserved, adapted, and passed on across generations and through experiences of immigration and new beginnings—all woven together into a vibrant, living tapestry of Jewish identity.
Meet the Panelists
Esther Moses-Wood
Esther grew up in Mumbai, India, where her family was part of a large historic Orthodox Jewish community centred around a 220-year old synagogue. After studies at University of Mumbai, Esther made Aliyah to Israel and worked in the high tech industry for many years. She immigrated to Vancouver in 2006 and today serves as Executive Director of Congregation Beth Israel.
Bella Sherman
Bella Sherman grew up in what was then Spanish Morocco, part of a Jewish community with roots dating back to the 15th century. A toddler when the Spanish Civil war broke out, Bella was raised in a family and community steeped in Jewish traditions which she carried with her to a new life in Canada. Now 90, Bella loves to share her stories and her wisdom with our community.
Tami Gabay
With a Middle Eastern heritage and a deep understanding of the power of representation, Tami is a passionate storyteller dedicated to elevating diverse voices. She is fluent in three languages, including Hebrew, and teaches at the Temple Sholom School where she helms the Hebrew Club. Tami is a veteran TV/film producer and writer, and her work has been featured on Netflix, HGTV, MuchMusic, CBC, OLN, Food Network Canada, and MTV.
Ronit Rada
Ronit Rada was born in the Jewish village of Ambover, Ethiopia where she grew up deeply immersed in Jewish life and traditions. At age nine, her family fled rising anti-Semitism, travelling on foot to a refugee camp in Sudan, and from which they were airlifted to Israel during 1984's Operation Moses. Ronit served in the IDF and earned a Master’s degree in Education. She immigrated to Canada in 2012 where she continued her career in education/nonprofit management while raising her family.

Book for discussion: "The Slow Burn" by Ali Rosen
Between a breakup and a burned-down restaurant, there’s nothing left in New York for Kit Roth except the ashes of her success. Needing distance and distraction, she agrees to work for her best friend’s pasta-making nonna in the Italian countryside. But instead of providing a quiet sabbatical to eat up time while her kitchen is rebuilt, the small town of Manciano keeps pulling Kit into its rituals and rhythms. And before long, it shows her everything she’s been missing. Simpler cooking, community…and Nico Ruspoli, an olive oil producer with his own scorched past.
