About Us
BBYO is the leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement aspiring to involve more Jewish teens in more meaningful Jewish experiences. For more than 90 years, BBYO‘s leadership programs the Aleph Zadik Aleph (AZA, high school fraternity) and the B’nai B’rith Girls (BBG, high school sorority) have been providing exceptional leadership programs and identity enrichment experiences, shaping the confidence and character of more than 400,000 alumni who are among the most prominent figures in business, politics, academia, the arts and Jewish communal life.
Now, BBYO’s network of Jewish teens, alumni, parents, volunteers and philanthropists serves as the Jewish community’s most valuable platform for delivering to the post Bar/Bat Mitzvah audience fun, meaningful and affordable experiences. With year-round activities in hundreds of local communities and inspiring world-wide travel experiences, BBYO’s broad program menu enables teens to explore areas of leadership, service, civic engagement, Israel education and Jewish values.

Levi Moskovitz, a student at King David High School, was elected as BBYO’s international teen treasurer (grand aleph gizbor) for the 2025-26 term. He is the only Canadian on the BBYO international board, which represents 70,000 teens from 64 different countries.

Kibbitz & Cookies: Jewish Pirates of the Carribbean

Kibbitz & Cookies: Jewish Pirates of the Carribbean
This month's topic: Jewish pirates of the Caribbean
After Jews were expelled from Spain and Portugal many of them settled in the friendlier lands of the Mediterranean including the Ottoman Empire for example. Like their Muslim compatriots who were also expelled in 1492, Jews were looking to get revenge against Iberian Christians by sharing with Muslims the newest military techniques and secrets used by Christians. They targeted Spanish and Portuguese merchant ships. One of the most famous Jewish pirates of Jamaica was Moses Cohen Henriques who in 1628, led the only successful capture of the Spanish treasure fleet.
Free of charge.

Jennifer Rigal
End-of-Life Doula | North Vancouver, BC
Jennifer Rigal is an End-of-Life Doula, educator, and hospice volunteer. She holds an M.Sc. in End-of-Life Studies from the University of Glasgow, where her research focused on death literacy and how children learn about death.
A trained facilitator with Shomer Collective, Jennifer leads conversations through Death Over Dinner: Jewish Edition and What Matters Most. She is also a founding member of the International End-of-Life Doula Research Group.
Jennifer focuses on fostering death literacy among children, youth, and the broader community, grounded in compassion, dignity, and meaningful dialogue.
Lianne Palmirose
Lianne started her passion for caring for folks at the end of life four decades ago when she trained to be a volunteer visitor in the Ottawa Jewish community in the 1980’s. She then went on to work as a home care Occupational Therapist at Vancouver Coastal Health for 22 years, with a special interest in palliative care. During that time, she became a member of the Vancouver Chevrah Kadisha and served as its head from 2022 to 2025. She is still an active member of the Chevrah. In the Spring of 2022, Lianne studied for her certification as an End of Life Doula and has been working with private clients in the community since graduating. She is also a member of an LGBTQ+ End of Life working group, which is developing education materials to support that community through the aging and dying process.
Aimee Promislow
Aimee completed end-of-life training in March 2022 with Lianne and has been a member of the Chevra Kadisha for nearly five years. She has always been drawn to meaningful dialogue and can think of nothing more profound or important than conversations about death, its place in our lives, the balance it brings, and how it shapes our understanding of what makes a good life.
Karen Gelmon
Karen has been interested in end-of-life issues for years. As a medical oncologist, she tried to be sensitive and skilled in helping her patients deal with palliative care, end-of-life issues, and death. As a Professor of Medicine at UBC she has had the opportunity to teach medical students and residents about these issues. A few years ago, she joined the Chevra Kadisha and began to study more about Jewish philosophy and rituals regarding death. As well as Jewish courses, she did a Death Doula course at Douglas College and joined the Jewish Death Doula group, which gave her new knowledge and skills. One way she is using those skills now is working with the Vancouver Coastal Health Medical Assisted Dying Program. She also wants to develop educational activities to prepare people of any age to help improve how we communicate about and approach our inevitable deaths.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot: The Rabbis' Play List
Join the rabbis from our four congregations for an evening of learning and spiritual exploration. Each rabbi will share a piece of contemporary music or poetry that has touched their heart, using it as a gateway into biblical and rabbinic texts, and into the deeper currents of their own Jewish life.
Together, we will listen closely, study deeply, and open ourselves to the ways ancient wisdom continues to echo through the voices of our time.
This annual gathering is an opportunity to connect across communities in a shared search for meaning, reflection, and prayer.
And we will end, as all good gatherings should, with cheesecake.
All are welcome. Pre-registration is required.
